News & Events

  • MAR 2013 - Breaking News: Launch of the alpha-Melusine discovery kits with 176 pre-treated venoms designed to conduct low-cost pre-screening campains for low to medium throughut assays or feasibilility studies. If you ever dreamed of screening 176 enriched venoms in one shot, time has come to make it a reality!

  • JAN 2013 - The Not-to-Miss event: the 6th edition of our NP2D "Natural Peptides to Drugs" congress in Zermatt is scheduled for December 8-11, 2013, book the dates!!!

  • DEC 2012 - This year, and despite a difficult economic situation, we are proud to have expanded our activities with new partners, and 2013 looks even more promising. We hired three highly qualified scientists, we have a new PhD student and one executive financial assistant. Atheris entered into new R&D Agreement with worldwide leading biopharmaceutical companies for drug discovery programs and offered its bioanalytical and drug discovery services to several other renowned companies, SME's, start-ups, institutions and universities worldwide.

  • DEC 2012 - Furthermore, we aquired huge collections of venoms to expand our Melusine catalogue, with emphasis on spider venoms and unexplored marine samples. Last but not least, after Activen SA in 2010 (venom-derived ingredients for the cosmetic industry), we recently co-founded another new start-up company dedicated to the development of tissue-selective cell penetrating peptides and we are about to create a new spin-off out of our sister company Funzyme Biotechnologies SA.

  • DEC 2012 - We have expanded our research capabilites with a major decision: we are now fully equipped and operational in molecular biology with world's first NextGen sequencing platform fully dedicated to venom gland transcriptome sequencing. This will strengthen our leadership in venom drug discovery and pave the way to our new concepts: Virtual and Synthetic Venom Libraries.

  • DEC 2012 - We are also particularly proud to see the strength of our patent portfolio confirmed and further expanding, covering novel venom-derived lead compounds, potent proteolytic enzymes for major applications in the health care and biotechnology industries, as well as a technology known as covalent capture for efficient peptide and protein purification. We have also 14 new scientific articles published in peer reviewed journals in 2012 and a number more in the pipeline, we contributed to international conferences with several invited plenary lectures worldwide, more than a dozen oral presentations as well as several poster presentations.

  • DEC 2012 - All of our "family & friends" stories are not only doing well. Each of them is impressively expanding. The enthusiastic reactions generated by industrial partners following the launch of our Melusine drug discovery concept went far beyond our expectations, especially following to the ditribution agreement we put in place with Bachem, FunZyme BioTechnologies S.A. is in a dynamic phase through stimulating industrial and academic partnerships, HiQScreen SaRL hired more scientists and was again cash-flow positive, with an exponential growth, the Toxinomics Foundation is now well established and also hired two high end senior scientists and one expert in communication, the CONCO cone snail genome project for health is delivering more and more, and the 2013 edition of our NP2D "Natural Peptides to Drugs" congress in Zermatt is scheduled for next December.

  • 9 SEP 2010 - Official announcement of the partnership with Bachem for the worldwide distribution of new Melusine Collections of pre-fractionated animal venoms ready-made for high-throughput screening (HTS) lead discovery project. Melusine are compound libraries of 400 pre-fractionated animal venoms ready-made for HTS drug discovery. These collections are made of a grand total more than 200'000 natural biomolecules, mostly bioactives, dispensed in a total of 32'000 wells. The perfect product to discover original, potent and selective leads!

  • 4 SEP 2010 - NP2D Congress preliminary announcement. The fifth Natural Peptides to Drug International conference will be held in in Zermatt, Switzerland from 4-7 December 2011, with satellite Venomics event to celebrate CONCO - the cone snail genome project for health. Book the dates! NP2D 2011 Congress Announcement.

  • JULY 2010 - Atheris to aquire two new Q-TOF mass spectrometers (Waters-Micromass), fully equipped with off-line and on-line standard and nanoflow electrospray ionisation. The resolution, accuracy and sensitivity of these two instruments will further strengthen our bioanalytical platform and reinforce our MS/MS de novo peptide and protein sequencing expertise.

  • 11-14 APR 2010 - Unprecedented success of the fourth NP2D "Natural peptides To Drugs” Congress in Zermatt Switzerland, at the foot of the majestic Matterhorn mountain.

  • 24 JAN 2009 - There we are with the launch of our new web site. We hope you like it?

  • 12 DEC 2008 - We were successfully audited in the frame of our ISO 9001 certification. It is our permanent objective to serve our partners with the highest level of quality, and this has conducted us towards a GLP and ISO9001 certification process, which will be particularly useful in the frame of analytical services and PK-ADME quantitative studies we like to undertake in the frame of pre-clinical studies and clinical trials.

  • 17 NOV 2008 - CONFIELD-2 Scientific expedition to the Chesterfield Islands in the frame of the CONCO Project. Professional scientific divers and a TV-team spent 16 days on a sailing boat to these remote islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Cone snails and a new species of algae were collected for scientific studies. More than 30 hours of film were accumulated for a documentary movie.

  • 10 SEP 2008 - Terrible news again. Keith Rose, with whom we have shared so much, left us. Keith, Professor at the Geneva University Medical School, was not only a proeminent scientist and an entrepreneur. He was also a close friend and one of our few mentors. Jointly with Robin Offord, Keith supervised Reto Stöcklin's master degree and PhD thesis. Amongst many achievements, he was the main inventor of the covalent capture technology, and he co-founded FunZyme Biotechnologies S.A. in which he was on the board of deputies. It will be our duty to achieve things he would be proud of.

  • 23 JUN 2008 - A scientific memorial day was organized jointly with the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA), the French National Museum of Natural History and the Toxinomics Foundation as a tribute to André Ménez.

  • 20 APR 2008 - Successful CONCALIS deep sea scientific expedition in New Caledonia. Six scientists from different horizons spent two and a half weeks on the ALIS oceanographic research vessel to collect deep sea cone snails.

  • 16 APR 2008 - Launch of Melusine drug discovery kits as a branch of Atheris. Melusine is a new concept in which pre-fractionated animal venoms and other natural extracts (such as insect hemolymphs) are offered on microplates in a ready-made form for drug discovery programs.

  • 14-17 APR 2008 -Third NP2D congress in Zermatt, Switzerland. Atheris is proud to announce that the fourth edition of its International Congress on "Natural Peptides to Drugs" was a true success again! Don't miss the next edition, we hope to see you at NP2D 2010, April 12-15!!!
    NP2D'08 Report    NP2D 2010 Announcement

  • 2 FEB 2008 - It is with great sadness that we had to face the disappearance of Prof. André Ménez, President of the French National Museum of Natural History and former Head of the Department of Protein Engineering at the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA-Saclay). André was a close friend and his input since the early days was instrumental to the development of Atheris. It is with André Ménez that Dietrich Mebs and Reto Stöcklin initiated the Venomics Project, jointly created the Toxinomics Foundation and launched the CONCO cone snail project for health. The void he leaves is terrible. We miss you André!
