The Impossible Dream
CONCALIS - Deep Sea Scientific Expedition on the ALIS Oceanographic Research Vessel
The CONCALIS deep sea scientific expedition took place from April 25th to May 12th, 2008 in the Grand-Passage and Surprises Islands north off New Caledonia's main Island. Six scientists from different horizons spent two and a half weeks on the ALIS oceanographic research vessel to collect deep sea cone snails by dredging and trawling. More than 100 specimens of venomous cone snails were collected covering at least 15 different species. Biological material was also collected for other scientific projects in different domains (molluscs, sponges, crustaceans, etc.). The discovery of an undescribed species of shrimp was also amongst the major events. A lot of increadible and fantastic organisms came out of the water, such as urchins, sea anemones, and even 5-15 million years old fossilized Megalodon (extincted giant shark) teeth. The material will be distributed to expert laboratories to be used for taxonomy, phylogeny and biochemical studies.
Participants to the mission were:We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the 12 crew members of the ALIS. All this would not have been possible without the help of our friends Jacques & Michèle Pusset, Alain Gerbault and Claude Payri. We are most grateful to the government of New Caledonia, to the French National Museum of Natural History and to the French Institute of Research for the Development (IRD) for their support. This expedition has been supported by the European Community thanks to the CONCO Project: LIFESCIHEALTH-6 Integrated Project LSHB-CT-2007, Contract Number 037592.
